Once a teacher. . .

June 25, 2009I was blessed to be a teacher. For more than ten years, being involved with students as their language arts and social studies teacher gave more to me than I could have ever given to the kids.First, I loved what I taught. I love literature and writing, so having the opportunity to open the doors of young people’s minds to the very thing which made my life joyous was a gift to me.Second, I have always been entranced by history. The woven texture of man’s development and culture has…See More

Reptilian Tactics

It’s a school in my backyard. All sorts of critters are learning lessons in survival. Squirrels dash through the tree branches to snatch fruit and avoid the sharp eyes of hawks surveying the hillside. Mocking birds seriously swarm and attack big black greasy crows too near their nests. Cottontail rabbits scoot under sheltering groundcover after munching holes in the grass. But, by far the most entertaining training I have witnessed involves a lizard family and my charming young goldendoodle,…See More

On Being a Landmark

So, I watched a PBS TV show last night which my husband had recorded for us. It was an old show, and the host/narrator has since passed away. It was about major Los Angeles landmarks which weren’t there anymore. Most of the time, I find these retrospectives only mildly entertaining, as I am one of those people who likes and welcomes change. This one, however, struck a major chord in my soul, recalling deep and important family connections and a time long since passed. As I watched, a proper woman…See More

Native Family

My childhood was rather sterile. It wasn’t really bad; there were many rich textures made by bright characters who moved in and out of my life. But, given the vast input we have today from our multicultural society, I have to say my youth lacked these vivid and colorful attributes. I was definitely monocultural. And white. (That may be redundant)That is not to say I was brought up to be prejudiced – quite the opposite. My parents valued education to the extreme, and wanted me to be well…See More

Native Nutcase

My mom and I didn’t have a close relationship. We were very different people who managed to navigate around each other as long as there was a goodly amount of distance. Looking back, I can only assume we just had vastly different values, and when that mixed with normal developmental conflicts, there just wasn’t much commonality. I loved her, but I never really did “get” her.She seemed so fussy and focused on being proper. I wanted to ride my bike or go to the beach. And, like many women, I was…See More

On Becoming a Native Plant

Truth is, California nurtures immigrants – whether they be human, animal or plant. Our fair weather and geography seem to provide just the environment to welcome and sustain new arrivals. Ethnically we are a jigsaw puzzle representing peoples of the globe; presenting an international buffet of communities, festivals and culinary opportunities. We host flocks of migrating avian visitors as they make seasonal trips north and south, as well as happy transplants such as once domesticated pets now…See More

Native Plant Society

March was a lion yesterday. I woke up surprised to the sound of rain on the roof and that flat grey world of a stormy day. But, it was a spring storm, one that is sporadic, not the solid good old winter rain that locks the sky into darkness for the entire day. This was a storm which would break up and flash brilliant blue skies at you. Bright yellow sun would light the hills framed by puffy white cotton clouds. Then, without reason, the world would darken and some thin light grey sponge cloud…See More

Doodely Doodely Doo

Doodely Doodely Doo March 26, 2009I live in an Orange County institution – a “planned community.” This is meant to imply a higher quality of life, free from the scourges of trashy urban signage, poor home maintenance, rotting cars on the front lawn. And, it does that. It also imposes your neighbor’s taste on things such as the color of your house, maintaining your fences, changing your landscaping, as that neighbor can be the “authority” on the architectural committee approving (or not) changes…See More

Native Plants

NATIVE PLANTS 1Susan Brandt 2009March 21It’s the first day of spring, I think. Certainly feels like spring in Southern California.Despite a heavy grey sky, there is gentleness everywhere. Go out to pick up the paper in the unaccustomed dark of the early morning and there is just a whiff, a subtle tease. What was that? Wait, it’s real – the tender sweet scent of jasmine as the very first blossoms open to share their sensory treasure with the world. The roses are ready. They haven’t burst forth…See More
