Lindy, What people are doing is simply "checking in" with Foursquare when they walk inside a restaurant, coffee shop or book store, etc. And, you certainly don't have to do it. If you want you can even register anonymously. The reason people even bother to do this is because they realize a benefit. Otherwise, why would anyone care? There has to be a benefit. Go to the site and see what other folks are experiencing. Don't simply take my word for it. Do your due diligence. Make your determination based upon your own observation of the facts.

Lamar I don't use data apps on my phone. If I am out it is for the purpose of devoting my attention for that time to the client I am seeing.

Lindy, you are in full control here. You only broadcast when you want and where you want. After all, your mobile device does not control you. Rather, you control the mobile device. What's interesting here is that Foursquare has found a way you can help drive commerce to a location. You can actually design the use of Foursquare to benefit things you care about or folks you know care about. It is really quite amazing. And yes, it is being used in Australian cities. If not a city near you now, next year will likely be a different story. You joined at my request Aardvark. Why not try Foursquare? It just might surprise you. It is really surprised me - and the closest city to me that is using it is two hours away in San Francisco. Remember, it took awhile for folks on Ryze to see Twitter as a valuable resource. I doubt it will take as long for folks - especially the most mobile among us - to see that there is real value in Foursquare. Like Twitter, the use of Foursquare needs to be something of a habit...a good habit.

@Lamar - I am not convinced I want to broadcast my movements to all and sundry.
