What's been great this year?  Enhanced understanding of how the world is changing.  As Seth Godin mentioned in both his book Linchpin and Tribes, the factory system is going away.  That is one of the reasons the unemployment rate worldwide is so high.  The old way of getting work done - going to a physical office and simply maintaining the status quo is disappearing.

Nevertheless, governments seem to think technology is the solution. But, it's not.  The solution is (always was and will forever be)  PEOPLE.  It's us - not the "stuff" we create.  And yet, it is the technology people created that is causing mankind to be shut out of the marketplace.  Is that not odd?  People create something that ends up eliminating their value in the marketplace.  My local grocery store actually has self-checkout aisles.  No human being need wait on me.  I can do it all myself thanks to technological innovation.

I look forward to being involved with some folks in 2012 who are eager to put PEOPLE first and foremost back into the marketplace.  I think it should be very interesting to see how that ends up being played out.  I am hopeful the county government will take a hint.  But, I am not holding my breathe.

However, while it is true that individuals with innovative ideas can take jobs away from people, people with innovative ideas can also put out-of-work people back to work.  Case in point, the 28-year-old kid who came up with the idea for Dwolla - a way to pay for goods and services using a cell phone without needing a Paypal account or a credit card.  Now, you would think something like Dwolla would come out of Silicon Valley, Technology Triangle, New York City or even Atlanta. But, Des Moines, IA?  The Midwest?  Absolutely not!  But, that is exactly where it comes from.

Some other clever ideas I learned about this year include -

1) Printfinity from Moo Cards.  I like the London-based companies idea of putting different pictures on the back on every business card.

2) Tungle.Me.  The idea of no longer having to contend with phone tag is very appealing to me.  I also like that this service syncs with Google Calendar.

3) WiseStamp.  I like having a unique signature in my email that actually multitasks.

4) EchoSign.  I like the e-signature idea of facilitating the completion of multi-signature contract in minutes without having to physically travel anywhere.

I just found this link that might be of interest to you on the recruiting topic, Ashish.

Freemium can be tough when you're scratching for money to go forward. A few juicy sales might make all the difference.

What happens with the resumes once they are in the database?

A friend has just brought out a recruitment package too that seems to be getting good traction.

A great initiative, Lindy. Would love to hear more about the asset management software and any interesting findings regarding the social media marketing.

I have been working on two of our software products:

(a) Communication Tracker for Centralizing Project Communications : We have hit a real need and are also getting good comments in general. But the market reach is very little with our meager resources. We shall soon be adopting a Freemium model, keeping an eye on viral marketing.

(b) HeadTracker - a Recruitment Management Software for the Intranet : Our beta customer is extremely happy to get close to 8000 good resumes into his database for zero time spent from his recruitment team. We are sorting out some wrinkles before making a trial version available for prospects.

In the process of building these products, we have depleted our reserves. Anticipating that the product sale will take some time, we are bidding for software development projects (using Java / PHP) where we sell our software development expertise for obtaining quick revenues.

Any comments from the group are welcome.

Hi All.

This group has been very quiet but we have some very savvy people are members here so how about a roll call. What have you been up to lately?

I'm coaching and doing a lot more work in the social media marketing sector since that's where there is a lot of interest and even more confusion.

Also working on the launch of a new project designed by a colleague here which is a software cloud application that I'm very excited about, that allows business to manage the HR and asset management paperwork, as well as training easily and effectively.

First run will be in Australia and then hopefully I'll be looking for people to develop a clientbase for it in the US.
